USDOT Number Inactive? Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Updated October 13, 2026
An inactive USDOT number means FMCSA considers your registration not current. You should not operate a commercial vehicle in interstate commerce until it is fixed.
Most common causes
- A missed MCS-150 biennial update
- The company asked FMCSA to deactivate the number
- Registration information FMCSA could not verify
Inactive is not the same as out of service
An out-of-service order comes from a safety rating, audit, or enforcement action. It cannot be cleared with a paperwork update; the underlying order has to be resolved with FMCSA first.
How to reactivate
- Claim your USDOT number in Motus if you have not already (guide).
- File an updated MCS-150 with current fleet, drivers, mileage, and contact details.
- Watch your status. Updates usually post within a few business days.
If your MC authority was also affected
Authority reinstatement is a separate step, and FMCSA requires the USDOT number to be active first. See authority reinstatement.
