Texas TxDMV Number

Texas intrastate motor carrier registration for trucks over 26,000 pounds.

Carriers that operate commercial vehicles only within Texas register with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and get a TxDMV number, often called a Texas DOT number. It is separate from your federal USDOT number, and you need the USDOT number first.

Who Needs a TxDMV Number?

  • Vehicles or combinations over 26,000 pounds gross, registered, or rated weight
  • Carriers hauling hazardous materials that require placards
  • Farm vehicles rated at 48,000 pounds or more
  • Vehicles designed to carry more than 15 passengers, including the driver
  • Commercial school buses
  • Household goods movers hauling for pay, at any weight

Texas carriers that only operate in Texas should register their USDOT number as intrastate. Need one? Apply for a USDOT number first.
