How to Set Up Motus and Claim Your USDOT Number
Updated October 13, 2026
Motus is FMCSA's registration system, which replaced the old FMCSA Portal and URS in May 2026. Every carrier now needs a Motus account to file updates, apply for authority, or make changes.
What you need before you start
- The company official's government photo ID
- A phone with a camera
- The email used on your old FMCSA Portal account, if you had one
- Your USDOT number and EIN
Step by step
- Create a Login.gov account. If you had an FMCSA Portal account, use the same email as the company official on it.
- Sign in to Motus with Login.gov and create your user profile.
- Complete the identity check: scan your ID and take a selfie.
- Choose Link USDOT Number and claim your existing record.
- Review the company information Motus imported and correct anything out of date.
Fixing a failed identity check
- Make sure the name you enter matches your ID exactly
- Use bright, even light and a clean, undamaged ID
- Use a strong internet connection so the session does not time out
- There is no limit on attempts. If it keeps failing, FMCSA can refer you to an in-person location.
Adding a filing agent
You can designate a transportation service provider, such as ICR Filings, to handle filings for you. In your company account, open the supporting companies section, choose Transportation Service Provider, enter the provider's filer number, and confirm. The provider accepts from their own account. You never share your password or verification codes.
