Got an FMCSA Authority Suspension Notice? What to Do Before the Deadline

Updated October 13, 2026

FMCSA sends an involuntary suspension notice when something required for your operating authority drops off your record. The notice lists an effective date, usually about 30 days out. Fixing the problem before that date keeps your authority active.

The two usual causes

  • Insurance cancellation. Your insurer cancelled the filing for your liability policy, often after a missed payment or a policy change.
  • BOC-3 cancellation. Your process agent cancelled its filing, often over an unpaid fee.

What to do now

  1. Find the cause on your notice or your FMCSA record.
  2. For insurance, have your agent or insurer file a new BMC-91 or BMC-91X before the effective date.
  3. For a BOC-3, have a process agent file a new BOC-3.
  4. Check your record to confirm the new filing posted.

If the date already passed

Your authority is suspended until the filing is back on record and reinstatement is requested. Do not operate under suspended authority. See authority reinstatement.
