How to Change Your Company Name or Address With FMCSA in 2026

Reviewed by the ICR Filings compliance team · Updated October 20, 2026

FMCSA expects your registration to stay accurate. When your address, name, or contact details change, you update your record instead of waiting for your next biennial MCS-150. Since May 14, 2026, these updates can no longer be made in the old FMCSA Portal. They are done in Motus.

What it costs

Nothing. FMCSA's fee schedule lists a request for change of name, address, or form of business at $0.

Changing your address

  1. Sign in to Motus and open your company account (set it up first if you have not).
  2. Update the principal place of business, mailing address, or both.
  3. Review the rest of the record while you are there, and submit.

Your principal place of business has to be a real location where your records are kept or can be produced. FMCSA says it rejects addresses that could never meet that standard, so do not use a mail drop as your principal place of business.

Changing your name or DBA

A new DBA or a corrected spelling of the same company is an update in Motus. Three other filings should match your new name, so plan for them too:

  • Insurance filing: ask your insurance agent to update the filing on record with FMCSA so it shows the new name.
  • BOC-3: a name change requires a new BOC-3. See what a BOC-3 is.
  • Truck markings: the name on the side of your trucks should match your registration.

When it is more than an update

A new name on the same company is an update. A new companyis different. Forming an LLC to take over a sole proprietor's business, or selling the business to a new owner, creates a new legal entity. That can mean a new USDOT number or a transfer of operating authority rather than a simple change. FMCSA's fee schedule lists a transfer notification at $0, but the paperwork matters. Ask FMCSA or ask usbefore you file, because the wrong path can leave the new company running on the old company's registration.

While you are in there

Check your fleet size, driver count, and mileage. If you are due for your biennial update anyway, do both at once. See when your MCS-150 is due, or have us file the update for you.
