FMCSA Login in 2026: Motus, Login.gov, and the Old FMCSA Portal

Reviewed by the ICR Filings compliance team · Updated October 16, 2026

FMCSA has several sites with their own sign-ins, and the 2026 move to Motus changed where registration happens. Here is which one you need, and what to do when you cannot get in.

Which FMCSA site do you need?

To do thisSign in at
MCS-150 update, address or name change, new USDOT number, authority application, reinstatementMotus (motus.dot.gov)
Drug and alcohol queries, driver consent, consortium designationDrug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov), a separate site and account
Look up any company's public recordNo login needed: SAFER, L&I, or the public search in Motus
Registration changes in the old FMCSA PortalNo longer possible. The Portal's Registration menu was turned off on May 14, 2026.

The FMCSA Portal itself still runs for now, and FMCSA plans to retire it eventually, but every registration change goes through Motus.

How Motus login works

  1. Motus uses Login.gov, the government's shared sign-in. There is no separate Motus password, and the old USDOT PIN is no longer used.
  2. The first time, you create a user profile and verify your identity with a photo ID and a selfie.
  3. The company official then claims the USDOT number and becomes the owner of the company account.

Common Motus login problems

I cannot claim my USDOT number

The company official on your old FMCSA Portal account should sign in with the same email address used there. A different email is the most common reason the claim fails.

Motus set me up as a service provider by mistake

FMCSA says carriers whose email was registered in the Transportation Service Provider role can close that account: sign in at motus.dot.gov, open the TSP account page, click the gear icon, choose Close Account, and confirm. You should then be prompted to claim your USDOT number. If Link a USDOT Number is still greyed out, send FMCSA a ticket with your USDOT number, the company official's name and Login.gov email, and proof you own the company, such as an IRS letter or articles of incorporation.

The identity check keeps failing

  • Enter your name exactly as it appears on your ID
  • Use bright, even light and an undamaged ID
  • Use a strong connection so the session does not time out

I lost access to my Login.gov account

Recover it through Login.gov itself, not FMCSA. Login.gov handles passwords and two-factor methods for every agency that uses it.

Still stuck
