What Is a SCAC Code? Who Needs One, What It Costs, and How to Get It

A Standard Carrier Alpha Code, or SCAC, is a unique two to four letter code that identifies a transportation company. It is issued only by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA), and it shows up in contracts, load tenders, transportation management systems, customs filings, and government freight programs.
Who needs a SCAC?
A SCAC is not an FMCSA requirement, but many partners will not work with you without one. You likely need one if you:
- Haul for large shippers, brokers, or 3PLs that require it in onboarding
- Move freight for government programs or contracts, such as USPS
- Work with ports, railroads, or intermodal freight
- Cross the border or appear in customs filings
What it costs
| Action | Online | Mail or phone |
|---|---|---|
| New SCAC | $110 | $127 |
| Yearly renewal | $104 | $116 |
| Reinstating an expired SCAC | $104 per year expired, plus $10 | $116 per year expired, plus $10 |
Carriers with vehicles of 33,000 lbs or less may also pay a $5 ID verification fee. A container code ending in U costs $138.
The ID check for smaller carriers
Since February 26, 2026, NMFTA requires an identity check for non-Class 8 carriers: anyone whose vehicles are 33,000 lbs or less, such as box trucks, cargo vans, and last-mile fleets. The person applying scans the front and back of their ID and takes a selfie during the application, so they have to apply themselves. Class 8 carriers do not need the ID check at this time.
How to get one
- Apply online at scaccode.com, NMFTA's official SCAC system.
- Enter your business details, how you operate, and the person who will manage the code.
- Complete the ID check if you are a non-Class 8 carrier.
- Pay the fee. Processing usually takes 1 to 2 business days.
Renewal
SCACs are issued for a year and must be renewed every year. An expired SCAC is marked inactive, and shippers, brokers, and government systems may stop recognizing it. Reinstating costs more than renewing on time, so put the date on your calendar.
Class 8 carrier? We can apply or renew for you. Smaller carriers apply directly with NMFTA because of the ID check.
